Johnson & Johnson (J&J), a leading medical device and cosmetics manufacturer in the U.S., has announced the recall of certain Neutrogena and Aveeno brand sunscreens after traces of the carcinogenic chemical benzene were found in some spray versions of their products.
In a statement, J&J advised consumers not to use these products. The company also instructed distributors and retailers not to sell these items and requested that they be immediately removed from store shelves.
The recalled products include several Neutrogena and Aveeno spray sunscreens, including “Beach Defense,” “Cool Dry Sport,” “Invisible Daily,” “Ultra Sheer,” and “Aveeno Protect + Refresh spray.”
Although the company clarified that the use of these sunscreens would not result in adverse health effects for consumers, the decision to recall them was made as a precautionary measure. The company also explained that benzene was not used in the manufacturing process but was detected in trace amounts in the final products, and an investigation is underway to determine how this occurred.
Many sunscreens and skincare products on the market have been found to contain carcinogenic substances, according to research.
